A Comprehensive Guide

Planning Your Trip to Bhutan: A Comprehensive Guide

let’s dive into how to plan your trip and when to start. Ready with your pen and paper? Here’s what you need to know:

1. Decide What You Want to Do in Bhutan

Determine Your Interests
Whether you’re interested in trekking, attending festivals, observing black-necked cranes, participating in a marathon, or tackling a mountain bike race, knowing your desired activities will help you select the best season to visit Bhutan.

General Cultural Experience
If you're aiming for a broad cultural experience or seeking peace and possibly enlightenment, you can visit Bhutan any time of the year.

Peak vs. Non-Peak Seasons

Peak Season: March, April, May, September, October, November
  Daily Tariff: US$250
Perks: Optimal trekking conditions, grand festivals, vibrant flora.

Non-Peak Season: December, January, February, June, July, August
  Daily Tariff: US$200
Perks: Lower tariffs, fewer tourists, more intimate festivals.

2. Know Your Dates

Choose Your Travel Dates
Once you decide on your activities, you can pinpoint the best time to visit. We recommend a minimum of a 7-day itinerary to explore Bhutan’s main valleys. Keep flexibility in your plans as DrukAir (Royal Bhutan Airlines) has limited routes and frequencies.

3. Booking for Peak Seasons

Advance Booking
If you plan to visit during peak seasons (March to May or September to October), especially to witness grand festivals like the Paro or Thimphu Tshechu, book at least 3 months in advance. During these high-demand periods, flights and accommodations fill up quickly.

4. Booking for Non-Peak Seasons

Flexible Booking
Traveling during non-peak seasons (June to August or December to February) offers a lower daily tariff of US$200. You don’t need to book as far in advance, but we recommend at least 2 weeks’ notice to arrange everything and prepare your visa.
